Red Door Interactive has always been committed to giving back. While in the past we have shared our expertise with various charities, we are now excited to align our pro bono efforts with a single nonprofit. The commitment to one charity will fit into our overall business model which focuses on results-oriented, long-term construct. After much consideration Red Door has now chosen to align our business with the nonprofit, New Leaders for New Schools, which is a nationwide organization that recruits and trains aspiring urban public school principals.

New Leaders for New Schools aims to recruit, train and support exceptional leaders to dramatically improve the academic performance of students at urban public schools.

Red Door’s multi-year commitment to New Leaders for New Schools will enable us to apply our Internet Presence Management model, which has proven successful for us and our clients, to help NLNS continue to achieve its goal of attracting outstanding educators to drive change in urban public schools.

Red Door feels strongly about the work of New Leaders for New Schools and the organization’s success thus far has been notable. We are excited to see how our Internet Presence Management model will further help drive the results that the organization has already seen.

Being recognized as one of the best places to work in San Diego has a lot to do with the amazing people who work here. We are extremely passionate about our work and embrace a number of “Core Values.” To recognize dedicated individuals who go above and beyond we developed a program called “Mad Props.”

“Mad Props” was created and implemented by Red Door’s “Morale and Culture Committee” back in 2006. It lives on the home page of our intranet and gives employees the opportunity to nominate their peers whom they feel embody the company’s core values. A nomination lives on the home page for 2 weeks and includes his or her picture, description of what was done to receive the nomination, and how it relates to our core values.

In addition to individual nominations, the employee who has accumulated the most nods each quarter gets an extra day of PTO (Paid Time Off) to use whenever they like! We announce the winner at the end of the quarter in a public fashion by ringing our celebratory bell (definitely gets people’s attention) in the office and congratulating that individual.

With that being said…..we would like to congratulate Kim Weinstein for being the most nominated employee of the quarter!!!

Kim is Red Door’s Online Acquisition Coordinator and has been with the company since last November. Some of Kim’s “Mad Props” include preparing last minute presentations, demonstrating expertise in PPC campaigns, and providing excellent customer service. She consistently demonstrates many of the Red Door core values such as “Goal-oriented Multi-disciplinary Collaboration” and “Treating customers like they’re at The Ritz.”

We look forward to sharing more of these announcements to showcase the hard work and dedication behind the team at Red Door Interactive.

Well, okay it wasn’t an actual mob-fest, but it was pretty fun to have actor Greg Grunberg (Heroes, Alias, Felicity) in the house – or make that food court – at Red Door client Rubio’s Fashion Valley mall location last Thursday. Greg was in town to promote his new Yowza! application – a mobile coupon app that searches out local deals based on your current location.

Greg and Rubio’s spread the word about the event via Twitter and Facebook, and found a sizable crowd, including a few news cameras, hanging around Rubio’s for chance to talk with Greg and snap a few photos. The Red Door crew was no exception, and we were even privy to some choice Heroes spoilers, shared over some World Famous Fish Tacos which we are trying hard to keep quiet (the spoilers, not our love of Rubio’s fish tacos!)

Greg Grunberg with Rubio's Business Supervisor, Lauren Dougherty

So how did the Yowza and Rubio’s partnership come about?

Rubio’s is one of Red Door’s social media clients (others include Souplantation, Charlotte Russe, and La Quinta Inns & Suites). During our ongoing monitoring, Red Door found a tweet from Mr. Grunberg himself urging Rubio’s to take a look at his Yowza! app. After a few tweets exchanged on Twitter (including a bit of pressure from Mr. Grunberg when he rounded up his followers to mass request Rubio’s on Yowza!), we brought him inside the agency walls for a meet and greet. Rubio’s is now offering exclusive coupons through Yowza! and its been a blast riding along Greg’s Yowza! train!

Many have surmised that the next generation of internet users will forgo using email all together, instead favoring communication through text message, chat, Twitter, Facebook, and other mediums that provide more instant gratification and collaboration. At today’s Google I/O Developer Conference, Google may have just put that debate to rest by announcing a new communication tool, Google Wave.

The idea, originally codenamed “Walkabout,” was spawned by Jens Rasmussen in Google’s Sydney office. Jens and his brother Lars started by asking several fundamental questions:

“Why do we have to live with divides between different types of communication – email versus chat, or conversations versus documents?

Could a single communications model span all or most of the systems in use on the web today, in one smooth continuum? How simple could we make it?

What if we tried designing a communications system that took advantage of computers’ current abilities, rather than imitating non-electronic forms?”

Working with a small team over the last two years, the Googlers came up with a revolutionary way to mash-up and improve the best features of email, chat, social networking, and wikis. One of the key features is the ability to chat and share files in real-time through a process called operational transformation (explained in a video by Google engineer David Wang). In laymen terms, this means that :

“In Google Wave you create a wave and add people to it. Everyone on your wave can use richly formatted text, photos, gadgets, and even feeds from other sources on the web. They can insert a reply or edit the wave directly. It’s concurrent rich-text editing, where you see on your screen nearly instantly what your fellow collaborators are typing in your wave. That means Google Wave is just as well suited for quick messages as for persistent content — it allows for both collaboration and communication. You can also use “playback” to rewind the wave and see how it evolved.”

David Wang explains for private conversations (not being published to the Web), this feature makes online conversations more engaging. With chat (and even more so with email), you have to wait for the other person to finish their thought and hit the enter/send button to comprehend what they are trying to communicate. Since we don’t communicate like that in real life, Wang contends that it breaks the natural flow of conversation.

Moreover, for public dialogues on blogs and Web sites, the possible applications for Google Wave are mind-numbingly endless. Others have already covered what is currently known about Google Wave, but there is obviously much more to come. In the meantime, check out some of these great resources on the topic.
